Why Magnesium?

Magnesium is essential to life as oxygen is to breathing. it is the fourth most abundant mineral and the second most abundant electrolyte in the human body. Magnesium is an essential cofactor required by 3751 enzyme systems that promote thousands of biochemical reactors in the body. It is involved in cell recovery, cell regulation and cell rhythm. It was and is widely believed since 1957 that Magnesium is only involved in 300 to 400 enzyme systems. But in 2013 a group of Italian researchers actually mapped out the "Human Magnesome" and discovered it is far more involved than the Harvard Professor guessed back in 1957. To put things into perspective, you have approximately 9000 enzymes that run your body.  Magnesium is a required cofactor in 42% of enzyme function.

You can't drive your car without a key. Every enzyme in the human body needs a key and it turns out to be minerals. Minerals bring electrons to the party. Your body is run by a handful of minerals that turn on your enzymes. Magnesium is one of those "key" essential minerals to life! Magnesium stands head and shoulders above the rest! Keep reading.

Calcium to Magnesium Ratio

Today we are getting twice as much calcium as we are to magnesium -- anywhere from 5:1 to 15:1. Our great grandparents only got 1:1 which is about 700mg of both every day, from their food.  This is a shocking difference and shouldn't be treated lightly. The excess calcium binds up your magnesium. You see, Magnesium calms the nervous system. It keeps you relaxed and calm. When your body switches into fight or flight mode, it dumps all the magnesium because you don't want to be chilling by the fire when a lion is coming to eat you. So, when you are under stress, your body dumps your magnesium so you can prepare to fight or run. We were able to replenish that lost magnesium through our diet once the stressful event was over. However, that is no longer the case.

Farmed Out Of The Soil

Magnesium has been farmed out of our soil (even organic soil) since around the 1940s and calcium has been increased in both the soil and through worldwide government fortification, we are getting way too much calcium AND iron. They've been fortifying our food -- mainly grains and processed food - with all eight forms of iron too. Did you know that iron is the most toxic and carcinogenic metal on the planet?

Magnesium and calcium have a complementary relationship in the body, especially in the muscles. Why? Calcium causes your muscles to contract while magnesium relaxes the muscles and the nervous system. If you have too much calcium in your body, your muscles can't relax and you stay contracted. Think rigidity and rigor mortis -- HELLO BACK PAIN! Magnesium also calms the nerve cells to stop firing off pain signals. It is a natural analgesic (pain killer) and is even used by anesthesiologists, successfully, to help manage pain before, during and after surgery to keep people off of opioids. So, calcium and iron are being increased exponentially while magnesium is being decreased exponentially. This is wreaking havoc on your health.

Where Is All This Iron Coming From

In a nutshell fortification. Back in the 1940s they determined that pregnant women were low in iron and given that 1% of the population is always pregnant they decided that the other 99% of us must be low on iron too, so they started fortifying our food with iron without realizing the unintended consequences. One of those unintended consequences is that iron increases cholesterol in the liver and in the body.

For an element to be classified as carcinogen it has to meet one of 3 tests: 1.) initiate cancer, 2.) promote cancer or 3.) progress cancer. Only one element on the planet that does that and it is Iron. There are 8 forms of Iron that have been added to the US food system since WWII through fortification and all 8 of them are carcinogens. In 1957 Senator James Delaney had an amendment passed in Congress, “The Delaney Amendment”, to prohibit any known carcinogen to be added to the US food system but there was one exception: IRON. So, they knew it caused cancer and cellular meltdown and cancer is going to surpass heart disease by 2020.

What happens when iron interacts with oxygen? Rust. Our bodies are 65% oxygen (75% water) when you break it down, most of it is oxygen. “Think of a rusty nail or rusty pipe, that is taking place inside our body wherever unbound iron sits and it manifests itself as different diseases but what proceeds the inflammation is oxidative stress. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) plays a role in every modern disease. The mechanism behind oxidative stress is iron mixing with oxygen. The body has elegant mechanisms to keep iron in check but those elegant mechanisms are all based on bioavailable copper which is in short supply in the US Food system, so the means to keep iron in check is dwindling. Add to this today’s stressful lifestyle which burns through your Magnesium and then all your B vitamins.” - Morley Robins

In 2015 a team of scientists mapped out the "Human Inflammasome" and that is where inflammation starts and it is known as the "danger censor" of the cell and is activated by iron. Inflammation is at the root of all disease! There is a constant battle going on inside your body between magnesium and iron.

No Mg = No ATP

Magnesium is involved in energy formation. "This Mg-ATP complex is required for the cells’ energy-producing structures (mitochondria) to produce ATP; the breakdown of food energy (glucose and fat) into water, carbon dioxide, and energy as ATP. ATP must be bound to a magnesium molecule to be biologically active." So when your magnesium is magnificent you have higher sustained energy throughout the day because ATP is absolutely dependent on Mg (Mg-ATP). No Mg = No ATP. Your cells get stuck in making exhaust and that is why you feel "exhausted". The more you burn through your magnesium the more tired you will be. The more you can hold on to your precious magnesium and constantly replenish it, the more energy you will make and the more energy you will have and the less pain and inflammation you will experience.

Additionally, when your magnesium levels are optimal you are chill! You also have higher serotonin levels, because serotonin is absolutely dependent on magnesium. Did you know that people with higher serotonin levels or the highest serotonin levels are the happiest, most stable, productive and successful people? People with low serotonin levels are basically at the bottom of the food chain and suffer from depression, mental health issues, anxiety and more. Your body needs magnesium to make serotonin.  Are you starting to get the picture?

Magnesium & Your Brain

Your brain is dependent on Magnesium. Magnesium is critical to preserving neuronal (nerve) function during periods of downtime when the neuron is not firing. They are linking many of today's neurodegenerative diseases to magnesium deficiency and high levels of unbound, excess labile iron in the brain. Iron eats magnesium for breakfast. Unchaperoned iron forces magnesium out of the cells. Your cells run on magnesium. Wherever iron accumulates, it causes oxidative stress -- a fancy word for rust.

Many studies are linking magnesium deficiency to depression, anxiety, mental health issues and, even brain injuries. Glutathione requires magnesium in order to detoxify chemicals, heavy metals, and others. Magnesium is involved in DNA and RNA synthesis. Modern Psychologists are using magnesium to treat their patients.

Having adequate levels of magnesium is our bodies built-in protection for our brains. Severe magnesium deficiency alone is enough for rats to develop widespread injury to their brains, affecting key brain functions. That is before there was even an actual head injury. In other words, when you are deficient in magnesium you don't need to suffer a hit or a blow to the head to experience brain injury. On the flip side, if you have adequate magnesium it is a preventative measure to keep your brain healthy and if you do get knocked in the head, or fall and hit your head or are in an accident, you have a built in protective mechanism to recover and heal much better than someone who is magnesium deficient. In fact, research is finding that if someone should happen to suffer a TBI they should be given a Magnesium IV within 1 hour to really help offset many of the complications associated with brain injuries. The sooner the better!

If you are deficient in magnesium -- even a mild deficiency -- a cascade of devastating processes happen within the brain that leads to terrible outcomes, even death. Your body needs a lot of magnesium EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

When You Feel Bad, You Do Bad!

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium deficiency is a widespread problem and some estimates suggest that over 90% of us are deficient. Magnesium impacts blood pressure, metabolism, and immune function. Magnesium is vital for glucose, fat, and protein metabolism, and affects every cell in the body in a positive life-supporting way. Due to poor farming practices, depleted soil, poor digestion, and absorption, magnesium deficiency is widespread and negatively impacts your health in thousands of ways! Some experts claim that magnesium deficiency is the single largest health problem in our world today.

10 Signs Of Magnesium Deficiency:

  • Poor Cognitive Processing
  • Headaches and chronic migraines
  • Constipation and related disorders like IBS
  • Fatigue (physical, mental and emotional)
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle spasms and cramping
  • Chronic Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Heart arrhythmias
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Mood and Behavioral Disorders, Depression, Anxiety

Additionally, certain lifestyle factors deplete your magnesium levels -- referred to as your magnesium "burn rate" -- things like: stress, chronic illness, digestive issues, pharmaceutical drugs, acid reflux drugs, smoking, smoking marijuana, drugs in general, intense physical activity, a diet high in processed foods, and more.

MOONMAG To The Rescue

Transdermal Magnesium is an excellent way to increase your magnesium levels without causing stomach upset. Your skin absorbs approximately 60% of what you put on it. Our Magnesium Creams and Body Butters not only increase your magnesium levels but stimulate DHEA production that occurs in the skin. DHEA is known as the "mother of all hormones", "the fountain of youth" hormone. You want to stimulate that. Our lotions, creams and body butters activate your skins natural good bacteria to restore and balance it, eliminating many skin issues.

Magnesium chloride is a highly soluble, potent form of magnesium for fast-acting topical uses. Magnesium chloride is more easily absorbed and utilized by the body than Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salt). Magnesium chloride is the best choice because of its clinical and pharmacological effects, and its lower tissue toxicity as compared to magnesium sulfate. Magnesium chloride is more easily assimilated, and therefore more bioavailable or absorbed and utilized by the body. Whereas magnesium sulfate is not as easily absorbed and utilized in the body. Magnesium sulfate is also more rapidly excreted through the kidneys than magnesium chloride, which explains why results don’t last long, and more amounts are needed for desired effects.

    Ancient Minerals Magnesium

We use Ancient Minerals ultra pure magnesium chloride which is approximately 47% magnesium chloride by weight with naturally occurring crystalline water. Ancient Minerals Magnesium Flakes are a supersaturated magnesium chloride from seawater. It has also been tested to be free of mercury and heavy metals. When rubbed on the skin, it bypasses the intestines and is absorbed into the tissues of the body. This lessens the laxative effect. It also stimulates DHEA production that occurs in the skin. For 250 years Genuine Zechstein magnesium salt has been protected at 1600-2000 meters deep in the interior of the earth, as part of the Ancient Zechstein Seabed in Europe, kept pure and untouched.
